Too dark dude. Needs some kind of focus point. Now it's just really dark. If you are going for mostly dark in this particular one, you should play more with contrasts. The lights on his suit could be enhanced for contrast, for example.

To be fair he's new to the software so it's likely he doesn't know here everything is quite yet.
Get to the fine stuff when he's had time.

Again, your stuff is WAY too dark.
If you use textures, set them to overlay. In general, use overlay with effects more. Your lighting, as it stands, is pretty bad. Even just a cooling filter (Layers > New Adjustment Layer > Photo Filter) could help.
In fact, the adjustment layers as a whole are a godsend. Use them.
If you can, do you mind shooting me a couple PSDs of, say, your last thing? I could show you what you could do to brighten it up without it looking washed out.

All my things are dark tho, I just in general like those depressing looking tags, the almost desaturated but not really kinda washed out look is what I usually go for...
also I............don't save any PSDs
actually....I..........don't even save any resources
I just search for what I think I want

Okay.
Okay.
Let me tell you why you're wrong.
A.
I'd say those are relatively dark/moody tags. But, oh my! You can see everything still! Dark doesn't mean encasing like 30-40%% of the canvas in black fog. It's just lazy and takes away from the atmosphere, not adding to it.
B. ALWAYS SAVE THE PSD FILES. You can delete renders/resources. That shit doesn't matter. Save. The. Fucking. PSDs. Though. What if you get a request and someone doesn't like the final result? What if you're speeding to finish a project and you find you accidentally missed a white outline or a render cutoff and you need to fix it? You can't. That's what.
C.
Still wrong. These look better and this is just with a slight increase of lighting. On the first? Duplication of base image set to linear dodge at 24% opacity and a black/purple gradient overlay with a brightness/contrast adjustment layer. Second one? Even simpler. Just a brightness/contrast adjustment.
They maintain the original tone/atmosphere and coloring but they look infinitely better because, again, it's not shrouded in black fog. Not desaturated at all. Not washed out at all.
And that's why lighting is important. You won't improve with Photoshop by sticking to the same stuff. You see I make a lot of missteps in my recent stuff because I try new things all the time, and yet I learn new stuff by experimenting and it ends with me putting out pieces that are staggeringly better over stuff I used to be proud of. Don't do the same shit each day.

It's...not black fog...it's a concept

The effects are intended not a result of lack of ability....i'm not new to this.....

If I smudge for my next 10 tags, it's because I want to get better at smudging.......if you try something entirely new for every single new tag you ever make you will not get good at the things you tried...the would just be.....................things you tried.....

Your graphics are very nicely done, RO. Much better than anything I could ever do.
I really like the atmosphere in the smudge art piece above.

I still think smudge is overrated. It's just not aesthetically appealing especially when the same can be achieved just through texture work alone.
That said, that looks nice.

Smudge is God, a few examples from other people and how they smudge
anything I do with smudge is not a good representation of how it's usually used

Smudge is God
Yeah, no.
Those examples are nice, but you're lending far too much credit to the art of "clicking on a part of a render and dragging your mouse in a swirl".
I tried it a few times in my GIMP days and I hated the results every time. I think smudge is more intended if you're a GFX artist who also draws themselves. It's for people with tablets, not for people like me with a mouse and a hobby.
