Part One to Current

Part 2

Sypnosis: Genshiken follows the lives of a group of college students drawn together by their shared hobbies, and the trials and adventures associated with being otaku. (batoto)

Genshiken Nidaime ("Second Generation") is part 2, starting from chapter 57.

Why you should read this:

  • If you love slice-of-life and somewhat want to relive (or...experience what your current uni life should be :P) your university non-study days. This manga just has the perfect amount (IMO) of every good ingredient for a school slice-of-life story. Enough romance, enough comedy, enough quirk, enough serious themes, enough everything.
  • It's about otaku and very realistically portrayed (even in other aspects, not just otaku). Don't we want to see how our Japan counterparts  in Japan get things done?
  • Impeccably sooth your heart if you just had a heavy run of Nolan films or gore seinen or...those action manga people have been recommending in the Clubhouse. Even if you didn't, still read it.
  • The character development is great. The atmosphere is phenomenally peaceful that I somehow thought I was living with the characters when I read it, if that makes sense.
  • Some traps are wow. But don't quote me on that.
  • Female cast are cute and pretty and...varied. They are more diverse than the male cast in both personality and character as far as I can see.
  • Nice art! The background is detailed from the start but the character art needs a bit of time to be established (just like 99% manga out there). You have to wait around 9 volumes but that's not too long. Bleach and One Piece on the other hand...
  • It's in Afternoon magazine. What? You don't know that magazine? It's a Kodansha magazine and I dare say it has the greatest amount of good to top-tier manga I have ever read/known about. It's dissed out stuffs like Vinland Saga, Mushishi, Blade of The Immortal, Eden: It's An Endless World, Parasyte, Historie, Oh My Goddess!, Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko, Big Windup!, and 3 best works of Tsutomu Nihei: Blame!, NOiSE, Knights of Sidonia. If that's not enough...you can go to Hell
  • Trust in Fulmine...or not...

I read and liked Genshiken and think it is pretty good / underexposed, so congratulations! Hopefully other people pick this up and it gets more discussion.

Just started this. One chapter in so far; I'll post my thoughts as I get through it.

Done with Chapter 4. I really enjoyed the Kousaka characterization so far, but was pretty surprised by the surprise at the end there.

He's cool, studies well, and an Otaku. What a package! You should learn from him so your future is as bright, 13 year-old admin!

But why are you surprised by that?

I like the background of this manga from the get-go. That panel of Kousaka's room is really detailed (and yeah, pretty boy lives messily...)

14 o:

The early chapters made it seem like he would just be clueless/oblivious.

I'm through chapter 18 now. Not super impressed with it at this point. I don't feel like the characters have really developed, and the plot is basically just about the cast looking at and acquiring hentai (side note: it's amazing how a manga that's centered around porn thus far is still more appropriate than HSDK).

I'm hoping something comes out of this fire, though. Further thoughts to come.

Well, yeah, it develops slowly. The first 3 volumes are kinda episodic a little bit. But it's the fleshing out stage so...

I know why I would recommend this-- I don't want to spoil what that reason is, but it definitely has little to do with the first half of the series.

I would not recommend the sequel except for tying up some loose ends. With that said, the anime adaptation of the sequel was pretty good. People say the first anime adaptation was better, but if you read the manga, you would notice they left out the last few volumes, which is all kinds of unforgivable in my eyes.

If you had said ''nothing'' instead of ''little'' then I can guess a certain rotten boy but...

I think part 2 is still very good though.

Just to clarify, when I said "the first half of the series", I was only talking about the first half of the original manga.

I like the sequel to a certain extent, but I feel it should've ended quite a few chapters ago. Not just because I think it already served its purpose, but because it's actually making me dislike one of my favorite characters for no other reason but to keep the ball rolling.

You know, I wasn't that impressed for a lot of this, but chapter 80... that was really well done.

Yup, that one.

Well, yeah, I love those chapters, too. It's indeed very well done. And all those guys in the club know and Kousaka is such a great bro...trap

Oh, this is ongoing? For some reason I thought they were all completed.

Anyway, just finished 110. Ready to strangle all the characters now.

I think at this point the only character even tangentially involved in the story that I still like is Ogiue.

Well, I can relate to that. Though I like Kuchiki, too LOL and Ohno and I don't dislike the others. I guess I care about the story more than the characters at this point. But yeah, after the first part getting attached to the cast, the new members are hard to love. I mean I hope to see the old line up show up in every chapter.

But the Hato thing needs to be solved first I guess.
