It's not really a "standard" per-se. However, surely a majority of people would consider this funnier than this. The fact is, the latter typically puts in the minimal amount of effort to be minimally funny and it's typically all the same "jokes" about idiots or how you can just fuck off and I don't care get me a wine. There. I just summed up 90% of the aforementioned text pictures in a single sentence.
I'm not quite sure myself about the statistics of it, but I'm bloody damn certain this one at least earns a place among tenth of the general populace:
The greentexts are always higher quality (otherwise nobody on 4chan would've bothered to screencap them) and, and I stress this, SOMETIMES tumblr's stuff is funny too. I'm not saying it always is, because usually it's not. But sometimes it gets a laugh out.
Shaggy-dog-story structure and (in)appropriate responses in form of comments win the day for greentexts despite it being text jokes with accompaniment pic that may or may not be related to it, and also helped by 4chan's culture and its atmosphere that foster such kind of joke. I agree that most backgroundless pseudo-motivational text jokes out there kinda miss the mark when it comes to comedic punch for contemporary crowd, but they need not be dismissed altogether, hence, my creating that new thread for those text posts.
tl;dr I'm holding this to the standard of what I consider funny and what I've seen internet (IE various forum/board goers, aggregates, etc.) consider funny. Big blocks of words behind a flat colored background aren't funny. 4chan and tumblr are funny.
Our mileage may vary on what's funny; but I dare say you're partly right on the bolded part: big blocks of words behind a flat colored background are mostly not that funny, unless the presentation/layout made and at least one picture give proper assistance to boost its funny factor.
