Okay, so this page - Top 100 Manga - annoys the hell out of me.  Mostly the sheer plainness of it all.  Nothing wrong with the information, but I'm fairly certain we can do better.

Question is, how should it be fixed up?  It has 3 lists in it -

  • top 100 manga
  • top 20 on-going manga for Dec14/Jan15 (yikes!)
  • top 100 anime.

I'd like to propose that the data be arranged in a table instead of just plain lists, maybe add some links to descriptions of the series involved, and some sort of determiner of when this lists were compiled and how often we revise them.

Any suggestions?  Any ideas of how you'd like this stuff to look?

Yeah, table is nice!

I would say 5 columns. Rank, name, link for reading (or info like bakaupdates/myanimelist), link for thread discussion on OMF (if there is one) and the last is a short comments as to why people should read that manga.

I like this up/ down thing. Can we make it so we can ... invest comment points on selected limited manga shares ?

Could be a neat forum game XD

I like the up down thing too, thats why I implemented it, it shows us what series is going well, and what series is dropping in quality. It'd be better if more people took part, it would give more accurate numbers... But its hard to rope people into voting for some reason...

This is why you have to tap into what people want. The "investment" game thing for imaginary internet points will surely tap into the greed / vanity/ egoism market.

Is there going to be a risk of market manipulation by Big Players? Sure.. but that's where our integrity as manga readers kick in right?

So how would this investment game work? Give me a short description on how the game would be run?

it seems like he wants to do a thing where or comments count as votes and enough comments on a selected manga means the manga goes higher up on the list.
basicly: the more people talk about it the higher it is on our list.

for example if I said onepiece was great in this post, that's a point for onepiece. how we could accomplish something that awesome is beyond me though.

I was making a lame joke about the UP / DOWN stuff looks like the up / down tickers in stock markets and the idea was our "number of posts" number becomes our capital for investing on certain manga. So you can change your Posts number by playing the manga popularity market.. and there was also a zing about post number elitism.

,,,

It's a good thing I don't make my living as a comedian lolz.

Still.. there's merit to the core concept.. if we could make voting more fun (like through a forum game somehow..., ), then there would be more voting.

The "stock market" game is possible but too complicated (20 shares per manga? how does trading work? are the amount reset per cycle? how about weekly vs monthly vs finished manga? etc.) not to mention it would seriously skew voting if people take the game too seriously and vote for "profit" instead of their perceived manga quality.

retro's suggestion is cool but we'd need advanced heuristics and a dedicated computer and algorith etc to do stuff like that.

Perhaps a more traditional betting setting up? I dunno.. I'll think about it.

BTW I didn't think the Top Manga/ Anime thing was an ongoing thing. I thought it was a one time big time thing.D: Seeing trends change wit the UP/ DOWN stuff makes it more clear that's its an ongoing thing for people to do. :)

Okay, I'm going to see if I can find the time to do the table coding and update this page today. Hopefully work doesn't get in the way.

As for the investment game, it sounds like it could be interesting if someone hammered out some rules that made sense.

It's hardly like anyone takes the voting seriously anyway. It's just voting for favorites and that barely has any reflection on the quality.

You're right that investment doesn't work -- betting makes more sense. But for betting to make sense, you need proper odds. Ones that make sense for users to bet outside of One Piece, Kubera, and Boku no Hero Academia.

The quickest system my sleep-deprived self can come up with would be something like this: you make a 'bet' about where you feel, say, five manga will be. For each place you get correct you get X, with a multiplier of Y for each place it traveled. So predicting Jitsu Watashi Wa would fall 10 places gets you more than predicting Kubera going up 1 place.

Can even group them by buckets: i.e, Kubera will be in top 5.

It does require a currency and the idea that you can actually use the currency for something other than Internet pride. Although the latter seems to be enough for most people (see reddit).

There are prizes I can think of are things like: Moderator-assigned CT, Custom CT, choice of an emoticon, etc.

Okay, got a start on redoing the page, including renaming it slightly.

I have the top 100 manga/anime info there (and everything else backed up), need to decide the best way to add the monthly ones, too.

What is the purpose of the monthly versions versus the larger list? I never took part in any of the voting so I'm not sure when this dates from and how often it changes.

The bimonthly version is for ongoing manga only. The frequent voting allows for tracking how a smaller subset of mangas are and how people's reception to them changes over time. I think it's deliberately skewed towards recency bias, i.e. this series has been really great to read recently, or this new manga is worth checking out, without having to consider it within the grand scope of every manga ever.

Ah, that makes sense. Might be a good idea to write up a little explanation of that for the page. I'll work on the on-going versions a bit later, but it's fairly easy if I use a table generator. Saves me having to code all that by hand, which is fine if it's not freaking table code. >.<
