And another creator falls prey to the dreaded "sequel slump".
...wait. I just realized. Or would it be "follow up frump"? I'm talking about when a creator has a megahit then the next project they do, not necessarily a sequel but just the next thing, bombs.

I tired to read Samurai 8 when it came out, but the setting and story felt so convoluted that it was really tough to absorb. It was a sci fi setting in space with cyborg samurai having strange bodies, and the MC learned to be a samurai from a video game. Then there were talking animals and the MC had some special sword inside him too that everyone wanted with everyone's ability system being weird as well. It was just too much for one chapter. Just too many ideas thrown together at once and it made it tough to really latch onto anything when the characters themselves don't stand out.
I know some disliked the art, but I thought it was fine. I do think that the scans we got didn't do the art any favors and it looked far better in the actual magazine or volume on paper where the drawing lines were more clear. Still, I do feel bad that it got cancelled. I always feel bad when a series gets axed even if I am not reading it, but it does feel like Jump was really hoping for this series to be a big hit for them and it just didn't work out.
And like @larkos1 said it is interesting how a lot of creators do follow up their big successful series with a failure, or at least a partial failure. Like Togashi with Level E after YYH or Kenshin's creator with Buso Renkin. Although I guess a handful also had the opposite happen. Like the Death Note creators or Mashima with Fairy Tail. So does feel like there is a stumble after their successful series with their next project, but the one after that sometimes ends up working out well.

Ok, I had to come here after reading @Shin comment on Burn the Witch thread.
So, Kishi failed huh? I rad the first 10 or so, but I hated the Ki/Mana/Chakra/spiritual pressure/magic/furyoku used in this manga. From the first chapter I failed to understand the connection between the swords and the animals and how everything fused into bubbles.
But it is still sad to see this happen.
Still, it must be hard after writing so many over the top battles, having to come back to start small. Like, after spending 5 years making the 4th ninja war with Madara summoning comets, Gai going rampage, Naruto and Sasuke using planet level buster attack, I imagine it must be difficult to write a fight with the main character using only the most basic techniques.
I think the obvious case here was when Hashimaru destroyed a comet by chapter 15 or so...
Oh well, let's see what comes next
