Is Darker than Black anime any good?

I read on tvtropes that it has a noir atmosphere.

The manga is a shoujo with bad artwork from what I saw just now.

How about the anime?

Its great....Personally I think that the second season was good but a lot of people didn't like it as much as the first

Pretty sure the manga was just there as a cheap promo for the anime.

Not really sure is I can get a reply on this thread or not but since r/anime is not a good source either I figure what the heck. Anyways since the announcement of the third season of Code Geass I figure I try to dabble back into watching some animes again. Not looking for something great but something that is good if that makes any sense, something that I can binge watch while eating a gallon of ice cream during day offs. Recently I felt that animes are somewhat more detached nowadays compare to what they are for the past 5 years with plenty of animes portraying characters without development or capability of change and agency. I feel like a hypocrite saying this but after seeing tons of cliche less believable or relateable. IDK if this decline in quality is the effect of Japanese recession or the Japanese anime industry is suffering from the Hollywood syndrome since no will to invest or  risk anymore.

TDLR; Looking for good complete anime seasons that has a decent plot plot and believable characters.

PS Would be great if it's Netflix too.

The first is the only one that I'd consider a masterpiece but it's also the one the requires the most specific taste so I can't guarantee you'd love it; the others are all generally good within their respective genres and most of them are 2 cour so they have more time to flesh out the characters than you would in a 12-13 episode anime. I'd be surprised if you didn't like at least five of the seven listed.

Same here. I was looking for ones like (in no particular order):

- 'Journey to Agartha'
- 'Your Name'
- 'Princess Mononoke'
- 'El-Hazard: The Magnificent World'
- 'Seirei no Moribito'
- 'Macross Plus'
- 'Tenchi Muyo!' OVA series
- 'Tenchi Muyo! the Movie: Tenchi in Love'
- 'Summer Wars'
- 'Patlabor the Movie 2'
- 'Azumanga Daioh'

I'm especially surprised to see no.2 didn't make it, considering how much people have been raving about it. It's done so well, that Makoto Shintai (the film's director) has taken to social media to literally beg his fans to stop watching it and to please not compare him to Miyazaki.

Wait, why would he beg his fans to stop watching it? I can understand not comparing him to Miyazaki but...

Link to article here.

Nutshell version: It's been such a critical and box-office success in Japan (and Asia in general), that people are declaring him to be the new Miyazaki. Shinkai is concerned there could be a backlash over it, so he's trying to nip it in the bud by publicly denouncing it and has even said he doesn't want 'Your Name' to be nominated for an Oscar either.

Speaking personally about the Miyazaki comparison, while I agree it may be too soon for him, I don't see why he shouldn't be compared to him. Miyazaki has already retired, so someone's bound to fill the void at some point and the quality of Makoto Shinka's work is similar enough that a fair number of anime fans believe he'll be the one to eventually fill Miyazaki's shoes.

In similar fashion, Shigeru Miyamoto won't be around forever either. In time, another game designer will have to take his place.

Well, he doesn't need to tell them to stop watching though. I find that a bit extreme...

Because Miyazaki went way beyond impressive visuals and has incorporated universal themes in a tightly wrapped story each time, from Nausicäa to Mononoke.

Shinkai is not remotely at the same level of storytelling, even if his success is there.

It´s like claiming Nolan is the new Kubrick because his cinematography is great, even though Nolan does not even come close to Kubrick´s complexity of movie subjects and the topics he tackled.

You watch Madoka? Didn't think you would touch Mahou Shoujo ''genre''

If it turns the genre on its head and goes into a completely unexpected direction, i will watch it.

Plus i am a sucker for Urobochi who has pushed a good fantasy series into something truly great with his prequel, plus the music is from Kajiura

Those polls are not really representative of any kind. Having said that, the only ones recommendable are in my opinon:

  1. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (2011)
  2. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch (2006)
  3. Gintama (2006)
  4. Legend of the Galactic Heroes (1988)
  5. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)
  6. Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2 (2008)
  7. Psycho-Pass (2012)
  8. Clannad: After Story (2008)
  9. Hyouka (2012)
  10. Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica Movie 3: Hangyaku no Monogatari (2013)
  11. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)
  12. Attack on Titan (2013)
  13. Space Battleship Yamato (1974)
  14. Cowboy Bebop (1998)
  15. Steins;Gate (2011)
  16. Natsume Yuujinchou (2008)
  17. Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (2014)
  18. Gurren Lagann(2007)
  19. Lupin III: Cagliostro no Shiro (1979)
  20. Bakemonogatari (2009)
  21. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002)
  22. Fate/Zero (2011)
  23. Your Lie in April (2014)
  24. Shirobako (2014)
  25. Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
  26. Gintama’ (2011)
  27. Kimi no Na wa (Your Name) (2016)
  28. Castle in the Sky (1986)
  29. Yuu☆Yuu☆Hakusho (1992)
  30. Mob Psycho 100 (2016)
  31. One Piece (1999)
  32. Angel Beats! (2010)
  33. Mushishi (2005)
  34. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu (2016)
  35. Hunter x Hunter (1999)
  36. The Twelve Kingdoms (2002)
  37. Mononoke (2007)

I like Madoka but since I don't watch much Mahou Shoujo in the first place I never know exactly what kind of deconstruction they did in Madoka. Is it just the serious story instead of the usual moe atmosphere?

Madoka has a prequel?

I do like Urobuchi, though sometimes I feel he has too much fetish for the desperate kind of characters in utilitarian setting :P I love despair but he should write something else one day. Even Urasawa has sport manga.

I would not really call it a deconstruction, more like a subversion of the genre.

This is a nice video of what Madoka did, pretty much look at the usual Mahou Shoujo clichéd events in a realistic and bleak light

Nah i meant Fate/Zero. Now i can´t say much about the visual novel or how in-depth it is, but judging from the adaptations, Fate is a good fantasy with an interesting premise (past heroic figures fight for a magical device) but it lacks the thematic context Urobuchi puts into it, he takes the premise and does much more with it.

I find the first three anime of his vastly different in aim and context, so i do not particularly agree.

Gargantia was fun and had interesting ideas but it never strived for more, and Aldnoah was a mess.

Ah and Psycho Pass was awesome, i sincerely hope they can finish the series one day.

I know they are doing three new movies but a third season would be nice.

That's a nice video. Funny it uses NGE as an example cause I hate mecha so NGE is about the only series of the genre that I completed (and only the TV show that you told me to watch. I haven't touched any movie yet)

Ooh, it mentions one of my low-tier favorites: Mayoiga. It's quite deadpan funny, does have some nice messages and animation is pretty good.

I still haven't watched it :(. It's on my to-watch list of course cause Nasuverse and by ufotable but there are several series so I'm kinda lazy. I think it's been 2 years since I put it on my list :P

Never watched Mayoiga

Fate Zero has two with 12 episodes, i think Fate Unlimited came out with 12 episodes each, Heaven´s feel will have three movies and the first one is out, and i do not know whether they have any plans to adapt the third route of the VN, it was adapted before in 2006 though.

You watched Kara no Kyoukai though, right?
