That picture means something though.
I don't think he was built as a backup after. The accident, but was a backup in the first place

As some of you may recall, when the chapters are compiled for Tankouban releases, Okamoto Lynn has a habit of revising or adding in new scenes.

These seems to be the new pages for Volume 15 and 16, depicting extensions to the Okinawa Field Trip and Ryouta and "Aphrodite"'s date:

Furthermore, I found a Baidu thread that has got a majority of the additions/revisions so far:

OK, reading through the (latter) Baidu thread that I mentioned above, Okamoto added A LOT of supplementary info in Volumes 8 and 9.
They pertain to what Grani (Kotori's Drasil) and Ragnarok are purposed for, and more on Ichijiku's motivations.

Foreword (Info gathered on Baidu)
In the cosmology of Brynhildr, Humans were created by Aliens, and they can be terminated by them anytime. Therefore, the higher-ups of Vingulf, Takachiho, want to attain a means to "slay the Gods".

Grani and Ragnarok
According to new scenes from Volume 8 and 9, when Grani hatches, its host will become Idunn, the Norse goddess of youth.
Specifically speaking, during the hatching, it will initiate Ragnarok, granting one person eternal youth in exchange for the rest of humanity. The grantee will supposedly then have the power to contend against the Aliens, which is what the Takachiho is aiming for.

Ichijiku's motivation
Essentially it is still the same as in the serialised chapters, he wanted his sister Rena to come back to life.
The additional detail is, Ichijiku thinks otherwise of Takachiho's ideal outcome: rather than granting someone with eternal youth, it is Idunn who will grant herself that.

Since the current Grani was cultivated from Rena's brain, his idea is that the resulting Idunn will essentially be Rena brought back to life with immortality. It's fine for him to trade the rest of humanity for that.
But since Kotori doesn't seem to have Rena's consciousness at all, rather than giving the chance to Kotori, he wants to transfer Grani to another host in hopes that Rena will be conscious this time.

Little does he know, Rena does lurk inside of Kotori's mind, but decided to hide that fact.

Revised Ichijiku death scene
The actual means of death is the same, but his dying words are much longer this time.

After admitting that it's Idunn herself (and by extension, Rena) who will become immortal, he is enraged that everything he's done has been a waste: he winded up killing his sister again.

He was willing to do anything to have Rena live again, but she winded up dying a second time.
"Hey!! Give her back (to me)!! Rena!! My sister!! Give her back!! Uwaaaahhhh!!"

Chapter 166

Looks like Ryouta is about to break due to the sudden twists and turns that shatter what was left of his normal life.

Chapter 169

With the end being in sight, it makes sense for the chapters to once again raise the tension.

It looks like Okamoto Lynn (author of Elfen Lied and Gokukoku no Brynhildr) going to start new series (don't know which magazine, though).

Interesting, wonder what genre it'll be this time

If he follows his previous pattern, then it might be something closer to real life than Gokukoku - given how after Elfenlied, a Sci-Fi-Horror, he followed up with Nononono, a sports Drama, followed by another Sci-Fi-Horror.

New series is out, it is um...not any of those...uh it's well, something that's for sure.
