I always loved Meg, shame she had to die.
Supernatural produced more good female characters than male characters
I don't know. After 9 seasons I can't remember most of them, but off the top of my head: Gabriel, Death, Crowley, Bobby, Rufus...

It's actually been a long time since they created a good female character. Even Sheriff Mills (who is the only lady left) dates back to the early seasons.
I do give Supernatural credit for making fun of itself for being a sausage fest though. As well as poking fun at some of the weird Supernatural Yaoi fans. One of the great lines of the show was when Sam was reading the "novels" and then told Dean that there appear to be ton of SamxDean fans. Dean's response: "They do know we're brothers right?"

I'd love it if there was a new female character next season, but I'd honestly settle for not having to deal with incredibly bland angels the entire damn season. Outside of Cas, every angel last season had the personality of wall paper paste. Lets go back to the time when demons didn't have to be knights to be dangerous.

@garlyle - I agree with you about the demons. I will say that angels are supposed to be bland personality wise. Only a few tend to be anything but and they are usually ostracized from the rest.

I liked the angels gadreel and naomi before they were killed. Though most angels are not all that interesting.

I liked many of the girls in SPN. Especially Bella. I understood why she got killed, but I still miss her nonetheless...
Jo's mom was awesome too (Helen/Ellen)
Anyways, I see you talking about yaoi fan, and I agree it's completely stupid. But it's so awesome when they make fun of it. Just like about Castiel and Dean in this glorious scene (t's in the end of the video ^^)
And let me add: I loved Balthazar. One of my favourite side characters of the show.

The most epic side character angel was/is The Trickster.

Trickster/Gabriel is a brilliant character. Honestly though, I don't know if I have enough trust in the current creative team to adequately use that character. I would love to be proven wrong though. He is one of my favorite characters in the series, right up there with yellow eyes, Meg, and Rufus.

Well, he did make an appearance in this last season and he was still as charming and entertaining as usual. And the way that episode ended...
...up in the air was a nice nugget thrown in.

I did like how he turned out to be Loki as well that made me chuckle but that episode actually really annoyed me i know the gods in this get their power from people worshiping them but still making gods like Odin and Kali weaker than angels was kinda lame those gods should of at least been able to defend themselves against Lucifer instead of all being owned. Also they could of been used for future plots but enough grumbling about that apart from that one bit that was probably my favorite season.

There's one thing I didn't like in the series, and that was the Leviathans.
They were gross…
I mean, they always did such a good job with supernatural creatures, but with those ones, I really feel like they failed. Fortunately, there was more than that in the season.

Really? The Leviathans were the first real scares in the series since Lucifer, and before him it was when the Demons first showed up and were terrifying - and before that nobody had the seat. I found them to be a huge success.

@azer_moli - What I didn't like about the Leviathans storyline was the last 3rd of their arc and how they essentially went out with a whimper as opposed to a bang. But the Leviathans did do two great things: 1. They messed with the Winchesters lives putting them on the run. I liked that element where they were once again running from the cops and feds. 2. Dick Roman. Nuff said.

Dick Roman; man, what a character. He was a caricature of humanity AND business, all at the same time. I LOVED the leviathan season, but I'm usually in the minority. nice to see I'm not alone in that.
@beakedbard That bothered me as well. Season five, when lucifer wiped those old gods out, it was a cool scene, but you could tell that it was a decision made when the fifth season was meant to be the last. When considering the fact that the show was going to get 5 MORE seasons, it was an incredibly wasteful move, that hamstrung entire mythologies from ever being serious threats, because it established that Judeo Christian religion had so much power. They had a chance to rebalance things with the Olympians, but they when in the opposite directions and made them bland, joyless, burnouts, not worth the paper that episode was written on. That's the thing about the writing in the back half of the series; its incredibly wasteful.
Alphas, Rufus, Men of Letters, Benny, Eve, Dick, Purgatory, Fairies, Gods, the Campbells, Balthazar, the fates, Horus or Osiris (forget which he was), Gabriel, the list could go on. All of these were incredibly interesting plot points that could have had legs but were wrapped up incredibly quickly. There is so much squandered story potential, and what is most upsetting is that many of these were discarded so that the terribly boring angels could get more screen time. That was a HUGE mistake. Okay, rant over.

I thought the arc where they were hunting the Alpha's was a great idea. I wish they could go back to that where the Alha's become a bigger threat. The same could be said for the Men of Letters. There could be a wealth of storylines regarding them. But for some reason the writers essentially killed them all off. Which is strange considering this organization was supposedly one that predates hunters and was a world wide group.
