The story begins with Yggdrasil, a popular online game which is quietly shut down one day; however, the protagonist Momonga decides to not log out. Momonga is then transformed into the image of a skeleton as “the most powerful wizard.” The world continues to change, with non-player characters (NPCs) begining to feel emotion. Having no parents, friends, or place in society, this ordinary young man Momonga then strives to take over the new world the game has become.
Should you Watch?:
Why You Should Watch:
Why should you watch Overlord? Well, after you read the Premise, pretty sure the 99% will come with a particular statement, and to those I just say No.
This is not your "Sword Art Online", as a matter of fact, I like to say Overlord is the "SAO without the SAO", why is this? For starters the protagonist is not your typical Hero that saves everyone because "as the protagonist he must save everyone", quite contrary, Ainz/Momonga is that kind of Anti-Hero that unless he gains something, he will not save anyone. This is one of the first things that makes Overlord so interesting, that "Unique" feeling you get by opening the first pages of the Light Novel, thinking "Wow Maybe this is not as cliche as I thought!".
Leaving that aside, Following the description, this is an Anime where the protagonist, a regular human becomes his avatar, but that does not mean his Human personality remains unchanged, by becoming the Skeleton, he loses many things, in particular his sense of emotions being costantly supressed. Of course, there will be moments where his human personality takes the best of him, leading to hilarious scenes, which leads to the general narrative of Overlord. Despite being a source equally dark to Hellsing or Berserk, the author always find the best opportunity to throw either Comedy or Fanservice (or both!) which is great.
As for combat itself, It follows some kind of RPG logic to it, such as strong spells of elements, or the characters being weak to some of them. The battles I have seen so far are very entertaining, as it shares similarities from a regular game, such as "Bosses" being inmune to certain spells, or having advantages or unique abilities. This is not "MOMONGA SMASH", The Protagonist himself restrains his own power because there are plenty of scenarios where he must not reveal to be a BONE-LORD. An element, or handicap that is always present when it comes to Ainz and his minions (Nobody is Human).
I have read the first 3 Vols of the Light Novel, which is why I am giving this summary, having read it, I must say this is an Anime where my expectations are above the fucking roof. Why?, one, because it is MADHOUSE, second, I would love to see many of the things I have read so far being animated with precise accuraccy.
Animation Production: MADHOUSE
I am opening this thread this early for 2 purposes:
To post any news related to the anime (which will come very soon)
To raise awareness for both the Anime AND Light Novel.
