We hope you'll like it!
This time around we didn't have anyone to proofread the chapter beforehand, so it may or may not be rough around the edges - even more than usual. (lol)
And on that note, if anyone would be interested in volunteering to do it, you're free to pm me or Baka (or both) for that.
So without further adieu: Enjoy!
After a needless squabble about the leadership position, the heroes went on their rescue mission. Along the way, they split up because Shin did not believe in Baka’s shortcut. Shin chose to subject himself to whatever fate Baka pointed, while Zeando and Relinquisher used another. Although they were warned of a large group of strong enemies standing between them and the objective, they did not have to face them, really, when Ganderath and Z. C. came for their help. After arriving at their destination, the fight between them and the Patoto Bosses, Buttercup and Sky began without a moment’s rest. Relinquisher took on Buttercup while Ganderath distracted Sky as Zeando sneaked around to free Nysta from captivity. Although at the end he got caught, Zeando managed to get as close to freeing Nysta as you could get before unknown people in suits and sombrero hats showed up. With little to no indication as to their intentions, what is the fate of our heroes?
CHAPTER 12: Bait And Switch
It is a new day in OMF High School. However, for a few of the students, it was a day that felt like it would never end. There, in the entrance of the principal's office stood two men wearing black suits and sombreros standing guard. In the center of the room sat a few familiar faces...
Ganderath sat nonchalantly on her bike.
Z. C. crossed his arms, tapping his elbow impatiently.
Nysta had little interest in what's going on as he cleaned his own ear.
Zeando sat with his head hanged down as if he awaits his own execution.
And Relinquisher who sat quietly with a dumb grin on his face.
As to why they are there, the situation becomes clearer when you know the principal herself, Ayame, sitting impatiently as a man in a luchador mask in addition to the suit and sombrero was reading from a list in front of him, "... Property damage, Unauthorized use of abilities, violent confrontation... Honestamente, we don't have the time to deal with these brats, especially during such... Un momento delicado."
Zeando lowered his head further, "I knew they wouldn't leave it alone with just dropping us in the dorms yesterday..." He thought to himself.
Relinquisher turned to Z. C., "Man, what have you done out there?" He said.
Z. C. retaliated, "What the... Most of these were about what YOU did!"
"You don't know that," Relinquisher answered.
Zeando started shivering, "... Is it just me, or it's becoming increasingly colder in here?" He thought.
The luchador masked man interjected, "... all of you are at fault all the same." He said.
Ayame sighed, "... Alright, I understand, El Chino. You can leave the rest to me." She said.
The luchador masked man turned around and walked towards the door, "I certainly hope I can, señorita." He said in a calm manner before going out, taking the two by the door with him.
Nysta watched him walk out quietly before responding with, "... Well, that was condescending."
"Yeah." Z. C. said while nodding.
"Definitely." Relinquisher nodded.
Suddenly, the room became a magnitude colder than a second ago, "Now listen, brats." Ayame began talking, "I need you to stop making smartass remarks as you explain to me what you have done last night."
"B-Before that," Zeando raised a shivering hand to speak, "C-Can you t-t-turn off the c-c-cold a little? W-w-w-we're f-f-f-freezing here..." He asked as he and the rest were shivering from the cold.
"It builds character. Deal with it." Ayame responded.
Faced with this response, Zeando lowered his hand, "Y-yes..." He answered reluctantly, "All it really 'builds' is hypothermia, but if she'd be any more upset, we might as well be blocks of ice..." He thought.
"Regardless..." Ayame began talking, "You should all know better than to abuse your powers in public. What told you it was a good idea?"
Relinquisher and Zeando exchanged a look before Relinquisher talked, "Well, it kind of just happened... And I'd like it to be known that they started it."
Nysta facepalmed, "O-Okay, n-now you just sound like a k-kid. Don't you have a better excuse than that?" He said shivering in his seat.
Relinquisher immediately replied, "C'mon, man. We just saved your ass. Work with me here."
"Saved?!" Nysta reacted, "I'd be lucky if I don't have any lasting damage from the bullshit YOU had me go through!" Nysta said.
Relinquisher hand waved his comment, "Pft... It wasn't THAT bad, relax." He said.
"WHAT?!" Nysta quickly lost his nerve.
Ayame slammed her hand on her table, freezing the area around her hand, "Quiet, both of you!" She said.
Zeando quietly shook in his seat with a stoic look on his face, "Yup... We're screwed." He thought.
Ayame sighed as she put her fingers on her forehead, "... Alright, I think got the gist of the situation." She began lecturing, "First of all, if one of your friends went missing, you should have just reported it to your teacher. If someone abducted him based on the fact he attended this school and knew about abilities, who knows what he could do to you all. You may not realize this, but not everyone like the way things are in the world, and some people would like nothing more than to watch it all crash and burn."
"..." Zeando silently shifted his glare towards Relinquisher.
"Ye- Okay, point taken." Relinquisher said in return, "But! It was obvious that-"
Before he could finish, Ayame continued, "SECONDLY, you shouldn't even be using your abilities in public, much less to fight. What if your faces got melted or something? All of you should know better than that. Especially you, Relinquisher."
"..." Relinquisher's expression changed.
Nysta decided it's appropriate to pick his nose, "Why is he so special?" He thought.
Zeando interjected by raising his hand, "W-With all due respect, the four of us were sure it was all just a misunderstanding. It all just escalated beyond our control." He said.
"Wait," Nysta said, "You were all in on it? Only 3 were in the factory..."
Ganderath crossed her hands and looked down, "There were 3 when I joined in..." She said as she turned Z. C.
Z. C. jerked his shoulders, "Don't look at me, I joined in after Zeando and Relinquisher split up with Shin and Baka." He said.
"Oh yeah..." Relinquisher said as he tilted his head, "Speaking of Shin and Baka, where are they? They didn't come back with us yesterday..."
At that moment, the door to the office was kicked open, grabbing everyone's attention. From the door, the school counselor, Arsonist Joe, came inside dragging an unamused Shin and an indifferent Baka by the collar behind him. The both of them were covered in mud and leaves and had their clothes torn. Joe then threw them in the middle of the office and they landed on their backs, after which Shin blew a leaf that flew on his nose.
Relinquisher snapped his fingers, "Here. They are here." He said.
Nysta rolled his eyes, "We all have eyes, genius." He said.
Ayame nodded at Joe, "Perfect timing, Joe. Now..." She turned to Shin and Baka with the environment growing even colder, "Why won't you explain to me HOW in the world did you go across the globe in little less than a couple hours?" She glared at the both of them.
Baka jumped up in excitement "WE RODE IN A BIG FISH!" He yelled. The image the others had was of Shin and Baka standing on top of some kind of an oversized goldfish as they heard that.
"... What actually happened?" Ayame quickly turned Shin, with little regard to what Baka said.
Shin sat up with his legs crossed, "... Seriously, you'd be surprised at how fast those undersea monsters move." He said nonchalantly.
Nysta facepalmed as he heard that, "Seriously? That's the worst excuse-" He thought.
"Hmm..." Zeando let out, "Well, some of those can go around the world in less than a day. So it's possible." He said nonchalantly.
"YO!" Relinquisher yelled, "You rode on a sea monster? That's sick!" He said as he leaned forward with excitement. He had the image of a giant sea serpent swimming with Shin and Baka on it's back.
When he asked that, Shin tried recalling the event. They were both on a motorboat riding away as Baka laughed maniacally. Suddenly, strange sharp rocks surrounded the boat, shot off the water and closed on top of them. After he finished, "... Yes." He said with what could be described as a relieved tone.
Z. C. tried averting his gaze, "Well... That is pretty cool." He said.
Ganderath crossed her arms and nodded, "I'd like to try that one day." She said.
Nysta blew a fuse, "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! THERE'S NO WAY-" He yelled.
Ayame held her chin with her fingers, "Zeando does have a point there. I guess that story checks out." She said.
"SCREW THAT!" Nysta yelled, "YOU CAN'T JUST BUY IT! No way this actually happened! Also..." He began pointing at Shin and Baka, "AT WHAT POINT WOULD YOU EVEN NEED TO BE AT SEA IN ORDER TO GET TO ME?!"
Baka looked up as he recalled, "It wasn't to rescue you, it was to get away from the Mexican Mafia." He said.
"... What?" Nysta got taken aback.
"Yeah... We saw them as we tried to get to the factory." Shin nodded, "They have been on our tails for years now. But they never caught us. Officially." He said.
Zeando held his chin, "Mexican Mafia? Are they talking about the guys from earlier?" He thought.
"..." Ayame remained silent.
Baka nodded, "Then, following our genius plan-"
"We improvised." Shin nonchalantly inserted.
"-While they chased us, we led them to the deck and I had the brilliant idea-"
"Disregarding all the warning signs."
"-of taking a boat to sea, where they can't catch us. And then..." Baka told.
Relinquisher, Zeando and even Nysta were on the edge of their seat, "... Then... What?" They said.
"... Well," Baka said attempting to recall, "It was dark all of a sudden. And wet. And not the ocean kind. Shin said not to think about that." He said.
"..." They seemed to realize what happened.
Shin quickly resumed the story, "... When we arrived on land-"
Zeando interrupted, "Wait, how did you get out of-" He tried asking.
Shin did not answer, "WHEN WE ARRIVED ON LAND," He aggressively reiterated. At this point Zeando, Z. C., and Relinquisher had an idea of what happened and moved their chair in the opposite direction of Shin and Baka. Shin continued, "From the there appeared to be some kind of forest. As we went on-"
"We were attacked! It was the start of a war..." Baka interjected.
"... Yeah." Shin agreed hesitantly.
"They were formidable. But if we weren't interrupted, we would have definitely-"
Nysta got frustrated, "Goddammit, who attacked you?!" He asked.
Shin looked away silently while Baka dramatically closed his eyes and opened them, "... Monkeys." He said in a low voice.
"... Monkeys...?" Everyone reacted.
"Yes, Monkeys." Baka reiterated in the same low voice, "When those bastards threw the first piece of sh-"
"MUD." Shin yelled.
"- at Shin, they declared war." Baka continued. At this point, Nysta moved his chair away from them, "The war lasted for years..."
"Give or take half an hour." Shin inserted.
"The casualties were in the millions."
"Nobody died..." Shin sighed.
"And then, they released... 'It'." Baka suddenly sounded at least 10% more dramatic.
"It...?!" Everyone was at the edge of their seats... Still a safe distance away.
"They didn't release anything," Shin said, "A stray shot - which you threw by the way - hit a sleeping gorilla that got pissed as it woke up."
"Shin, stop ruining everything. Nobody likes a party pooper." Baka said as Shin groaned, "A good story needs drama and actual stakes, otherwise nobody cares." He continued.
"We're just telling them what happened. No need for all the unnecessary-" Shin said.
"Pft, details." Baka said dismissively.
"Exactly!" Shin said.
Nysta seemed to somewhat lose interest, "... Then what?" He asked.
"Then..." Shin continued, "Then the gorilla chased us around until we ran into Joe, which he then took us on a helicopter back here. We then took turns sleeping on the way."
"Wait," Zeando raised his hand, "What about the gorilla?" He asked.
The Joe filled in the rest, "The Joe told it to go back to sleep." He said.
Zeando and Nysta jumped in their seats, "Whoa! Forgot you were still here..." Zeando said.
"And that's it." Baka said, "All in all, it was a decent adventure." He crossed his arms and nodded.
"That was a SHITTY adventure!" Shin yelled in response.
"I know, I was there." Baka grinned.
"Pft..." They then both burst out laughing, "AHAHAHAHA!"
"'Shitty'...! Perfect finish!" Baka said while laughing.
"I know, right?" Shin responded. They then bumped fists.
Z. C.'s face soured, "A pun...? Seriously?" He said. As he turned around, he caught the rest giggling to themselves, "I'm so done with this now." He thought to himself.
Ayame crossed her arms, "I guess this will do for the explanations." She thought. At the same time, there were knocks on the door to the office, "... Come in." She said.
The door opened and from it came Insane Soul, holding a bag and wearing a futuristic-looking bracelet with Kyut on his shoulders, "Hey principal, uh, Azer, Class C-2's teacher calls for everyone." He said.
Kyut nodded, "Yeah, she said she wants to start the exam already." She said.
Ayame sighed, "You've got an impeccable timing, kid. Alright, all of you are free to go, but I want you all to see me afterwards for your punishment." She said.
"Eeeeh~" The group let out.
"Yeah, what did you expect? Now go, you have an exam to take." Ayame responded.
They all walked out of the room, lead by Soul and Kyut.
Z. C. was disappointed, "How lame." He said.
Nysta looked pissed, "This is stupid. I'm the victim here, why am I punished?" He said.
Relinquisher and Baka said in unison, "It's 'cuz you suck." As Shin giggled at the comment.
"What was that?!" Nysta immediately retaliated.
Meanwhile, Zeando stared with confusion at Ganderath as she silently walked her bike.
Once they were all out and the door closed, Ayame and Joe were the only ones in the room.
The Joe turned to Ayame, "So... What are you planning on making them do? Cleaning the school has long since lost its spark." He said.
Ayame pushed her head back with her hand, "I don't even know anymore... I'm not built for this job." She said.
"Hahaha..." The Joe reacted, "Don't worry, the Joe thinks you're doing a fine job."
Ayame went to her desk and pulled out 2 papers and looked at them melancholy, "... You know, sometimes I'm not even sure if they are the same people or not. They seem more like normal brats that get into more trouble than they can handle." She said.
"It is true, their reputation seems misplaced." The Joe nodded, "However, the Joe will only say this much: Back on that helicopter, I held them down and the glare I felt during the whole flight was not like a normal teenager. It was more like a beast, preparing an escape at the slightest opportunity." The Joe then turned for the door and started walking towards it, "The Joe doesn't know much about them personally, but the Joe knows this much..." He opened the door, "... They are good actors." He walked out and closed the door behind him.
"..." Ayame was in deep thought and looked at the papers, "Actors, huh?" She said. She then threw the papers on the table. The papers had the caption "WANTED" and a picture each, one of Shin and one of Baka. She then lit a cigar and opened a window, "So... As for the punishment..." She thought out loud.
Meanwhile, Relinquisher, Z. C., Zeando, Nysta, Ganderath, Shin, and Baka all walked to where the exam is to be taken, all lead by Soul and Kyut.
"And so," Kyut said, "You guys better listen as I explain how the test is going to go." She said.
Soul looked up perplexed, "Why you...?" He asked.
"I am a Guide. I'm supposed to be the one that instructs people." She explained.
"I don't think that-" Soul began saying.
Relinquisher interjected, "C'mon man, let her do it." He said.
Nysta looked away with his hands in a pocket, "Yeah, who gives a fuck? Just get it over with." He said.
Soul looked at the excited grin Kyut had on her face, "... Fine, whatever." He said.
Kyut raised both her hands with a peace sign, "Yes! Victory!" She proclaimed.
Shin was almost indifferent to the situation, "Well, aren't you glad... Now hurry up and explain it already." He said.
"You're right, Mr. Monster!" She responded.
"Urgh..." Shin groaned, "I almost forgot she called me that..." He thought to himself.
Kyut cleared her throat, "Ahem... Let me explain how the exam will be performed. You'll start by having each of you wear a NerveGear knock-off designed to send your consciousness to a virtual setting like in Sword Art Online. Except it will look even less like a game and actually have a purpose." She began explaining.
"Yooo!" Relinquisher reacted, "Hot Zings up in here!" He said.
"Big deal," Nysta said, "Dissing SAO has long since lost its spark. That argument is now officially more annoying than it is profound."
Z. C. nodded, "I have to agree with that." He said.
Zeando shrugged his shoulders, "I'm more of the opinion that we need to move on from talking how good or bad SAO is." He said.
"Aye." Baka said. However, he seemed more interested in a dark, marble-shaped object on his hand than the topic.
"Oh, definitely." Shin nodded.
Kyut looked back at them with a frown on her face, "... May I continue...?" She said.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah..." The group replied.
Kyut cleared her throat again, "Ahem. Anyway, you'll be in a virtual environment, where you'll be tested for your essence proficiency and how well you use your ability. Probably through some personalized exam, or something. We're not too sure." She continued.
"Hold on..." Shin said, "Why go through all that trouble? Can't they just set up some test room for everyone or something?"
Zeando held his chin, "Well, it might be for safety. Like, it's possible there's an ability that also harms the user. Like the recoil from a gun, you know?" He theorized.
Soul expanded, "Yeah, well, that and it's a new technology and we're the guinea pigs. Again." He said.
Shin rolled his eyes, "Of course we are." He said.
Nysta shot his arms upwards, "Why would it be any other way." He said.
"Makes sense. However," Zeando questioned, "I can accept they manage to simulate our powers through some extension of the technology we tried out before, the one about telling our abilities, but now I wonder why this ‘full dive' technology more known about to be developed? Sounds like pretty big news to me."
Soul began explaining, "From what I got it's an Essence-based technology at least for now. How it works is-"
Kyut continued, "Something-something-Essence-related-to-mind-something." She "explained".
Shin shrugged his shoulders, "Sure, that works." He said.
Zeando nods, "I'm okay with this explanation." He said.
Relinquisher joined in, "That was a perfectly clear explanation." He said.
"Aye." Baka said absentmindedly, rolling the dark object on his hand.
Kyut crossed her arms and grinned proudly, "Hehe. I know, I know." She said.
"Oh." Soul suddenly remembered, "Speaking of sci-fi stuff, I almost forgot, the teacher asked me to bring these to you..." He took out futuristic bracelets, the same one as his, out of the bag he carried, "Here." He handed them the bracelets which they distribute among themselves.
"Oh, hey." Zeando reacted as he wore the bracelet, "It's the same one you have. I was wondering about that."
"Aye." Baka responded as he kept staring and poking the dark object in his hand.
Shin noticed Baka was out of the conversation as he tried to hand him the bracelet, "Hey, are you even listening?" He asked, knowing full well what to expect.
"Yeah, yeah... Earthquakes in Atlantis. Sounds like a big deal. Or something." Baka replied waving Shin away.
"Wha-" Nysta overheard, "That sounded nothing like-"
"Whatever," Shin said, "Just give me your arm for a sec." He grabbed Baka's arm and put the bracelet on him, "Hold on... Where have I seen that thing on his hand before?" He thought to himself.
Z. C. examined his bracelet, "So... What are these for?" He asked.
Soul began explaining, "So you see, these bracelets are actually like an upgrade of the ability reading tablets. They can even read other details about us and we can keep track of all that now. It's like a glorified character sheet, basically."
"Ooooh." Relinquisher reacted, "Neat." He said.
Zeando held his chin, "So how does it work?" He asked.
"First," Soul began explaining. "You concentrate a bit of Essence on the bracelet. When you hear a beep, you'll know it's on." There soon was a collective beeping as they activated the bracelets.
"Good." Kyut said, "Now you're all brainwashed and have to follow our orders forever. Good effort."
Shin sighed, "You're not fooling anyone, Kyut." He said.
Relinquisher grinned, "Nice try though." He said.
Zeando visibly sweated a little, "Y-Yeah..." He said.
"What?" Kyut reacted in surprise, "How would you even know?" She asked.
Shin answered without hesitation, "I've been brainwashed before, so I would know how it feels. The real Shin is long gone." He said.
Everyone stopped in their tracks and stared at Shin extensively, except for Baka, who bumped into Nysta as a result and dropped the dark object. It disintegrated, sending out a shockwave that could not be felt by anyone. Shortly afterwards, Shin had a shiver down his spine. He looked around briefly as a result.
"HEY!" Baka let out, "What's the big idea?!" He reacted.
As he heard that, Shin refocused himself, "See?" He said with a grin, "Now THAT'S how you pass a dark joke for a fact."
Baka looked around, "What did I miss?" He asked innocently.
"A joke." Relinquisher said in a flat tone.
"Yup." Shin answered.
"So that never happened after all." Nysta sighed nervously.
"... Or did it?" Shin squinted his eyes.
"C'mon, man!" Zeando reacted, "You're freaking me out!"
"You're letting me freak you out." Shin replied.
Z. C. shook his head, "For the love of... Baka!" He called out.
"Yes, sir!" Baka replied.
"Did Shin ever get brainwashed?" Z. C. asked.
"What? No!" Was Baka's immediate answer, "... Or was he? I can't remember." He quickly backpedaled, much to the dismay of everyone.
At that moment, Kyut whispered something to Soul. He nodded and then walked closer Shin.
"Urgh..." Z. C. groaned and turned to Zeando, "Just- Just use your ability on him and be done with it." He said.
"I'm... I'm kind of scared to now..." Zeando replied.
Shin sighed, "Look, this is getting out of hand." He said, "You can relax, I'm clean - the same guy I was born as, give or take natural character develop-" He said as Kyut slapped him on the head and left it there for a few seconds, "... What was that for?" He asked.
"..." Kyut concentrated with a worried look.
"Well?" Soul asked.
Kyut lifted her hand, "Short answer: He's clean." She said, "He's not brainwashed, but that complexion is..." She thought to herself as she glared at her hand.
"..." Baka stared at her silently.
Shin scratched the spot Kyut touched, "What did you do?" He asked.
"Oh, that?" Soul started explaining, "As a Guide, she can sense Essence flow. So she could sense if you were tempered with or something." He said.
"... Yeah..." Kyut said.
"Hey," Relinquisher reacted, "that's a pretty neat ability." He said.
"Yeah," Zeando said, "That's fascinating, what else can you do with that?"
Z. C. shook his head, "I think we're getting off topic here." He said as he turned back to walking.
"Right." Soul said as they all joined him, "Back to the bracelets. If you'll take out your phones and point to the bracelets, it will automatically download an app and display your data on it. But..." He explained as they arrive in front of a seemingly dead end and Kyut got off him, "Do it later. We're here." He said.
"We're nowhere." Nysta said.
"Wait for it." Soul said as he showed his bracelet to one section of the wall that was slightly off color. With a short confirmation beep, the wall beside him opened up. The inside looked like an elevator straight of a sci-fi movie with how white and electronic it looked with a controller in the middle and enough room for 40 people.
Relinquisher whistled at the sight.
"Whoa..." Zeando was amazed.
"Nice." Z. C. grinned.
Soul smirked and showed everyone inside, "... We're here." He said as they all went inside. As Soul got inside after everyone he still had the smirk on his face.
Nysta rolled his eye, "Why are you showing off? It's not like this place is yours." He said.
"Yeah?! Well... Shut up!" Soul replied and he slammed the button to go down.
"Hue. Got you good." Baka said.
Soul sighed as the elevator door closed.
Inside, everyone did their own thing as they waited for the elevator to reach its destination:
Ganderath cleaned her bike.
Nysta and Z. C. gave it their all at leaning on the walls like brooding edgelords as if they are in a competition against one another.
Baka and Kyut were playing Patty Cake while Shin and Soul were watching.
Zeando actively checked the controller out of interest.
Relinquisher fiddled with his phone, "Hey, Insane, how long does the app thing take to download?" He asked.
"A while. Also, no Wi-Fi." Soul answered as everyone but the focused Baka and Kyut groaned in disappointment.
Shin added a question, "And the elevator?" He asked.
"... Yes." Soul answered.
Baka looked focused, "... Are we there yet?" He asked. Shin sighed as he heard that.
... Several minutes later, the elevator arrived at the destination. Meanwhile, Azer was directing groups of 5 students from the class to the rooms they'll use during the exam, remaining with only Misty. Azer noticed the elevator as it arrived. As the elevator opened, the scenery inside was extraordinary:
Baka and Kyut were still playing Patty Cake. However, their hands were only a blur of a barrage of after images of palms as the rest were watching them in shock and awe except for Shin.
Kyut was completely focused, "ORAORAORAORAORAORAORAORA-" She yelled.
Baka also did not back down, "MUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDA-" He yelled.
"NANI?!" Soul was in shock.
"IMPOSIBULU!" Zeando reacted.
"These hand movement speed..." Z. C. said, "It's as if they can stop time!" He elaborated.
"I know that technique," Relinquisher said, "It's called ‘ZA WARUDO'!" He proclaimed as the rest gasped.
"Ok..." Shin wasn't impressed, "Now you're just reaching for this reference..." He thought.
Of course, Azer should have probably stopped them since they were short on time. However, she was somewhat amused by the display. Meanwhile, Misty was simply speechless.
Amidst the barrage, Baka messed up. He missed Kyut's palm and, while he missed hitting her, her palm hit him and blew him away as a result. Baka hit the wall and lied there seemingly unconscious.
"Oops..." Kyut let out as everyone looked at Baka.
"Hey!" Soul reacted, "Can't you at least try going easy on him?!" He said.
"I'm shorry!" Kyut held her head in tears, "I got too into it!" She said.
"Baka, are you o-" Zeando yelled out.
Before he could finish, Baka rose up with blood coming out of his mouth, "Huehuehue..." He giggled and cleaned his mouth, "Not bad. It has been a while since I was pushed back so far. However, this isn't even my final fo-"
Shin interrupt his cliched speech, "You can stop now, we arrived." He said.
"Finally," Baka started stretching his neck, "I was starting to run out of cliches." He said.
Kyut hugged Baka in a hurry, "Are you really ok?" She asked in tears.
"Don't worry." Shin responded, "This guy is, like, impossible to kill."
"Aye." Baka reaffirmed, "I'm actually immoral-"
"Immortal." Shin corrected.
"-You can't kill me if you tried." Baka added.
"... Really?" Kyut cleaned her tears, "I thought humans were supposed to be fragile, except for Mr. Monster." She said.
Shin nodded, "You would be right, except he's a bigger monster than me. He'd probably be able to take a few more of those before they take effect." He said.
"REALLY?!" Kyut's eyes shined.
"Yeah- wait." Baka answered. She then quickly punched him in the stomach again, "Blargh..." He bent down holding his stomach.
"Oooh!" Kyut was impressed, as Shin was giggling to himself.
"S-Shin, you poophead." Baka said, "I'll get back on you for that."
Soul grabbed Kyut's shoulders and pulled her away, "Yeah, how about you don't do that? Just because he can take it, doesn't mean you should dish it out." He said.
"Oh..." Kyut was somewhat sad.
Misty walked towards the group, "What are all of you doing?" She asked.
"Hmm...?" Relinquisher reacted nonchalantly, "Of course, we-"
Azer clapped her hands to gain the group's attention, "If all of you are done with your oddly relevant reference of a ‘90s manga series, hurry up and divide yourselves into groups of 5 and 4. Insane, you be with the group of 4 together with Kyut." She said.
Zeando tilted his head, "Wait, we're taking the test in a group?" He asked.
"Not exactly." Azer answered, "Since the equipment for the exam is... Complicated, it would be more manageable with small groups. Now hurry up, we should have started by now." She elaborated.
"Fair enough." Zeando said as he walked towards the room Azer pointed at.
Nysta sighed, "Let's get this over with..." He said.
"C'mon," Relinquisher said, "Cheer up, it's gonna be fun!" He pushed Nysta to go after him.
"Do you ever stop complaining? God..." Misty followed them.
"..." Ganderath silently followed.
"So..." Z. C. said as he walked to the remaining room, "We're what's left?"
"Looks like it." Soul said as he held Kyut's hand and walked with her.
"Aye." Baka followed.
Kyut was all giddy, "This will be fun!" She said.
"Well," Shin said, "Aren't you excited?"
"Yes!" She answered, "It's not often I get to see Master in class!"
The door opened before them, letting the cold air and bright lights rush in from the inside. The inside was a mess filled with tubes, wires, and monitors displaying all kinds of numbers and symbols. It was a real tight fit inside, even if the room was not small to begin with. In addition, there a scientist-looking person inside, complete with a lab coat and a clipboard.
"Whoah!" Baka and Kyut let out, "This place is even messier than our room!" Baka added.
Z. C. looked around, "No wonder ‘it would be more manageable in small groups'..." He said.
Soul nodded, "You got that right." He said.
"Oh." The scientist turned around, "Be careful not to step on anything going inside."
"Yes." Baka, Kyut, and Soul replied.
Everyone except Shin began entering the room.
Shin stayed at the entrance and stared at it intently, "..." He scanned inside and out, "... They are not really there, they are not really there..." He thought as he suddenly started sweating and took a step back.
Azer noticed his unease, "Is something the matter...?" She asked.
"..." Shin turned around, "Is this really safe?" He asked.
"Yes. Like before, I checked them myself." She answered.
Baka saw Shin's worried face, "Hey, Shin! Don't worry, it's fine! Probably!" He said while waving around a helmet with a bunch of wires sticking out of it.
Kyut began waving it even faster, "Yeah! Hurry up!" She said.
The scientist tried stopping them, "Hey, don't wave it around like this! Those things are delicate!"
"‘K~" They answered in an insincere voice and stopped waving the helmets.
"..." Shin squinted his eyes, "Why did this make me feel better? What is wrong with me?" He thought to himself as he went inside.
... Shortly after, they finished putting on the helmets, in addition to all kinds of other contraptions on their bodies. At that moment, Azer's voice could be heard in an intercom across all the occupied rooms, "Check, check. Can you hear me?" She asked.
The scientist in each room gave a thumbs up to signify they can hear her.
Azer continued, "Good. As you know, you'll shortly go into a virtual world in order to take the exam. As soon as you'll enter, you'll get instructions on what to do. Think of it like playing a video game, and the exam as a quest. Are you all ready?" She said.
Baka made a thumbs up, "BEAM ME UP, SCOTTY!" He yelled.
Shin turned to Baka's direction awkwardly, "... Close enough." He thought.
Although the scientist looked a little awkward too, he quickly put up a thumbs up to signify it's all ok. He then sat near one of the monitors and seemed slightly confused.
"Alright," Azer said over the intercom and snapped the scientist back, "When I reach 0, the exam will begin." She said, and nodded at the scientist beside her who proceeded to push a few buttons, "3... 2... 1..." All the scientists synced their enter presses, "... Link sta-" She got suddenly cut off.
Shin's body suddenly felt exponentially lighter, as if he wasn't wearing all the over complicated sci-fi suit anymore. Furthermore, it was suddenly warmer and felt steamier. When he opened his eyes, he found himself in front of a hot spring. He was surprised to say the least.
"YOOO!" He heard Baka from behind him, "They sent us to a hot spring! Sweet!" He said.
"Did they really?" Shin asked himself.
Meanwhile, Baka started stripping, "Yo, what are you waiting for? Let's go inside already!" He said.
"They said we need to wait for instructions."
"Are you blind? They are totally telling us to chill in the spring since they know we're too good for the test." Baka finished undressing and walked towards the spring.
"Yeeeah..." Shin squinted his eyes, "Sure. Whatever." He said.
"Now then..." Baka buckled his knees, "Geronimo!" He yelled as he jumped inside the spring.
Meanwhile, Shin picked up Baka's clothes and looked at them and his. He then looked at the night sky's moon, "... I have a bad feeling about this." He thought to himself.
... The room Shin's group used to occupy was dark and silent, with the only sound audible was the way the empty spot where a person was had the helmet dangle in the air, hitting all the now inactive contraptions.

Nysta held his fists up high as he made his entrance and took a sit in front of Baka.
Baka: What’s up, fam?
Nysta: Let’s cut the chit-chat. I have some bronzies I need to destroy in league.
Baka: Alright, Mr. Cancer. Soooo… I really have only one question for you: When are you gonna say it?
Nysta: … Say what?
Baka: You know.
Nysta: No, I don’t. Just fucking say it already.
Baka: *Sigh* When are you gonna say “Thank you”. We did save your ass back then.
Nysta: *He facepalmed* Oh, for fuck’s… I HAD EVERYTHING UNDER CON- Wait, YOU WEREN’T EVEN THERE! WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU DEMANDING SHIT FROM ME?!
Baka: Oh, really?
Baka pulled out a videotape.
Baka: *Grin* Oh, look here~ this very specific, exclusive footage of street violence happening inside some factory~ I wonder who’s in it~
Nysta’s eyes narrowed.
Nysta: You better not…
Baka looked over Shin, who signaled everything was ready. Suddenly, a huge TV screen popped out in between Baka and Nysta. Nysta immediately threw his chair at the screen, breaking it.
Baka: What the- Dude, that cost an arm to get! It’s like the only high budget thing around here!
Shin: *Chewing popcorn* Literally.
Nysta: I DON’T GIVE A FUCK! You’re not showing that footage!
Baka: Oho~? I wonder why you don’t want us to see how you… “Had everything under control”.
Nysta got flustered and frustrated.
Baka: Is there something you want to confess to? *He began nudging Nysta* Ah? Ah?
Shin ran out of popcorn and decided to ditch the place. He took the camera and walked out of the studio. As he closed the door, you could hear a small explosion and weirdly colored gas coming out of the room.
Shin put shades he pulled from his pocket on and walked away.
Shin: That’s all, folks!
