Plot Summary
Lain Iwakura, an awkward and introverted fourteen-year-old, is one of the many girls from her school to receive a disturbing email from her classmate Chisa Yomoda—the very same Chisa who recently committed suicide. Lain has neither the desire nor the experience to handle even basic technology; yet, when the technophobe opens the email, it leads her straight into the Wired, a virtual world of communication networks similar to what we know as the internet. Lain's life is turned upside down as she begins to encounter cryptic mysteries one after another. Strange men called the Men in Black begin to appear wherever she goes, asking her questions and somehow knowing more about her than even she herself knows. With the boundaries between reality and cyberspace rapidly blurring, Lain is plunged into more surreal and bizarre events where identity, consciousness, and perception are concepts that take on new meanings.

I watched the first three episodes and I am not sure, if I understood everything. But it's much better than the first anime.

So the "dead" girl is probably in cyberspace, right?

Does the maincharacter have some kind of visions or were that dreams? Or something in cyberspace and she cannot distinguish anymore between the real world and cyberspace?

Just got done with the first episode

Firstly yaaay a anime I can watch on my Funimation Now subscribition.

I love how dark it feels and how the girl is so distanced from everyone else including here own family.

What a messed up life.

Yeah this series is pretty confusing early on but it makes more sense the further you go into it so you should more or less understand what's going on now at episodes 10-13 as opposed to when you were on episode 2. Though even after watching the entire series there are still a few scenes that bewilder people but the overall narrative itself is easy enough to follow despite the way it's presented.

The subject matter is simply a matter of personal taste but if you're knowledgeable or interested in topics like Ontology, Computer Science, Theology, Philosophy of the Mind (particularly the mind-body problem), and Cognitive Neuroscience then this show will be more likely to appeal to you. Some of the themes such as personal identity, technological advancement, interpersonal communication, and posthumanism are handled in plenty of other anime but are at their most abstruse here so SEL is not a show for everybody. As much as I like it now it took me until my second re-watch for me to really appreciate it.

Anyway I'm about to star episode 12 now so I should finish this today.

I've already finished it though my opinion hasn't really changed from before. The one flaw that stands out no matter how many times I see it is that I don't care the slightest bit about the characters or what happens to them with the exception of Alice who keeps the show somewhat grounded (at least when she isn't fantasising about fucking her teacher). The total lack of emotional investment aside, Lain is philosophically interesting and meticulously well put together so I can forgive this flaw enough to enjoy it for it's many strengths.

@Prince
Yeah I agree about the characters, honestly SEL is a show that is more fun to think about and discuss than it is to actually watch for me but I happen to be a big fan of cerebral anime so I end up really liking it anyway.

@secretz
Technically we were supposed to be discussing it as we went along but I think for a show like this it works to wait until the end since that's when you have a somewhat full understanding of all the craziness.

@Tokoya @Fulmine @tewwo @Oben @Grimmjagger

What are your thoughts on this series?
