So the humans theycapture have to be alive?

Think of the Tan in the same manner as Fullmetal Alchemist's Philosopher's Stone - one has to be synthesised using living human beings, no use if they're dead

The translation from Viz this time unnerves me. Even if I excuse the team on this occasion due to all the pseudo-Chinese words, the quality of the translation this time feels awful compared to before in grammar and phrasing, let alone accuracy.

1. To start with, in case it wasn't clear, the conversation at the start of the chapter isn't about "which gender do I prefer to love?", but "which gender do I prefer to be?"

Page 6
Jump seems to have an unclear translation
Are you referring to the part that first mentioned "Kishitai"?

2. The translator seems to be mistaken in thinking the Kishitai (鬼尸解) term mentioned in the chapter refers to the old, withered state. Literally "demon corpse unleash", it actually more likely refers to the flower monster state of the Tensen.
In short, Zhu Jin was scolded for being so pathetic as to having to go into monster form against a mere human.

3. Their treatment of "Soushin" and "Monshin" as "Guardian Deities" and "Gate Deities" are fine, but they really should've translated "Soshi" as well in that cup scene. With 宗師, literally "sect/religious leader/master", they could've gone with "To our Grandmaster" in that part of the sentence.

---

Now then, I can start commenting.

Mk, I think what happened is a unknowingly using a special Ninjitsu to hurt it.
Attacking faster doesn't seem to be that big of a deal.

About vanquishing the Tensen

When this chapter first came out, the Chinese readers had an interesting line of thought: when it came to Chinese Wuxia fictional stories, a common trope is that fighters can no longer practise martial arts because some opponent in the past permanently wrecked the source of the Qi in their body. Some readers thought that Gabimaru might've struck something similar against the Tensen.

But with this chapter, we see that after Zhu Jin drank what is presumably Tan, his withered face recovered.

This would suggest that the Tensen can be killed if they run out of regen, if their opponents attack faster than they can regenerate.

So girl save the guy?
Girl betray?

About Mei

At first, I thought Mei was a former resident of the village like Houko was. But seeing as Zhu Jin knows her, perhaps she is actually also a Tensen?

What's more, I had thought that Mei's rescue of Gabimaru would invite wrath onto the village, but after seeing Zhu Jin lie about Gabimaru's fate, which in turn hides Mei's involvement in the matter, now I'm really curious about who Mei is, and her relationship with Zhu Jin

Also, some thoughts about her lack of speech: if she is Tensen and belonged to the same company as the rest, then that would mean she's also lived for a long time.

But what if say, she was originally a baby when she became a Tensen? And then her body slowly matured over time? And without parents?

That might explain why she can't speak; for her longevity, no one bothered to teach it to her (albeit she still can clearly understand speech)

In any case, we don't know enough to get bearings on whether Mei technically "betrayed" the Tensen by saving Gabimaru. But I'm eager to find out.

About the search party

Of the original 20 people from the search party, 10 are still alive; 5 Prisoners, 5 Executioners, and everyone making an appearance this chapter.

Glad to see that the Bandit duo are still alive

Well this is a problem, Sagiri's group are heading towards Hourai while unaware that Gabimaru and Mei had already left the place. They better not have to face off against more Tensen.

Worse, once they've passed the mist, Yuzuriha is likely to take the chance to sneak into Hourai all by herself and thereby throw the group into disarray.

We shall see. Not much longer now until Viz catches up to the raw.

---

Lastly, we finally got some names for the Tensen. Some trivia about the two revealed names:
  • For "Zhu Jin", the Chinese Scans believe that the Chinese characters the author was going for are 朱槿, for the Chinese Hibiscus plant
  • For "Ju Fa", 菊花, for the Chrysanthemum plant, which would make "Ju Hua" a better English romanisation

The author is definitely sticking to a fauna motif of sorts throughout this story

It's been a while since I last read this, but I'm happy to see the story progressing so well. Jigoku Raku started off slow, but now I look forward to reading it every week.

I also think Mei may be a Tensen. Would explain her speed and strength.

Ah right. Honestly, the original line was phrased in such a way that it's a headscratcher to put it properly into another language.

In any event, the gist of that sentence is that the speaker is the boss of them all, and he's the only one whose allowed to dish out any punishment

More on topic of Tao due to this chapter

Looks like main way to fight is via use of Tao.
When the the chapter 24 first came out, I wondered if Gabimaru unknowingly (rereading states he knew the kind of attack he did but didn't know it was Tao)
used Tao, assumed tạo was super effects/ attack system for the Tensens.
I paid attention to how Zhu Jin asked Gabimaru after that attack if he knew what he was doing (I'm guessing the Tensen is not expecting anyone to know Tao)

However you missed my point, thinking Gabimaru landed a hit on a Chi Center, and that drink recovered that.

It also a question of whether Gabimaru attack in later chapter 24 was effective due to attacking faster then Regen, or it was a Tao attack?
Combination of both?

Just caight up on this manga and I looooove it. Im sorry I judged it so fast. The story is actually going in an awesome direction!

How is everyone going to learn tao tho? It seems like a few already know it even if they dont know wat its called but wat about the others? It would be kind of weak story telling to jus have them all accidentally learn it without someone having to actually teach them. We maybe if they do it right it wont be so bad. Im excited for next chapter!

How far away are we from actual publication date? It took like what, 2-3 months for VIZ to translate the last chapter translated by Fallen Angel?

If you exclude the Special that was published in the WSJ magazine about a month ago, we are now fully caught up to the raws from this week onwards

Combination of both?

With Ch 30, after seeing how the Doshi read the flow of Tao and struck Choubee in his blind spot, it felt to me that that's also what Gabimaru had inadvertedly did when he fought Zhu Jin.

Like, Gabimaru first struck his neck, then immediately focused on his head. Zhu Jin had concentrated his Tao to guard the neck, but he wasn't able to redirect them to the head in time, and as a result suffered actual damage. Gabimaru thinking the "impact" felt different would be consistent with this idea.

In short, I think Gabimaru landed the hit because his "experiment" worked, not because he was able to use Tao

I really don't think everyone will learn to use it, maybe 6 out of the remaining 10 at most.

Outside of Shion who already has a grasp of it, Sagiri seemed the closest to have exhibited the ability based on the fight against the giant. And chances are Choubee will sense the flow while being so close to death.
Otherwise, I can see Gabimaru, Gantetsusai and maybe Nurugai actually learning to use the power, no accidental discovery whatsoever.

---

By the way, I had written a post on Reddit that details some of the Chinese folklore and mythology that've been featured in the manga up to Ch 26. Intend to cover stuff between Ch 28 and 30 at some point.
