I thought Finland was part of Scandinavian countries due to the similar flag and its geographical location but turns out it's so different in many ways...

Ex. Finland was part of Sweden for several centuries, until the early 1800s.

Then how come the languages are so different? Even I can tell even though I don't know Swedish or Finish

I don't know precisely why the Finns don't have a Germanic language, but yes - it's completely different. It's part of the Finno-Ugric languages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finno-Ugric_languages
    Also for funsies: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elvish_languages_(Middle-earth)#External_history

So yeah, linguistically completely separate from us. Though they still teach Swedish in Finnish schools, which has been a debate over there for quite some time as to whether or not they should abolish it.
